In November 2007, a young soldier who had been medically discharged
arrived at McGhee Tyson Airport in Knoxville, Tennessee. Through
unfortunate miscommunication, he had thought the military would
deliver him to his home in Johnson City, approximately 120 miles
from the airport. Luckily, Michelle Brown was working that evening.
Michelle began to ask around the airport to find a way to get the
soldier home to his loved ones. She alerted the airport police to
his situation, and they in turn worked with a local taxi driver
to drive him to the bus station. The bus was to leave at 5:30 a.m.
the next day, and knowing the soldier did not want to spend the
night at the station, Michelle and the police officers arranged
for the young man to spend the night at the airport.
Just as Michelle was going to the ATM to help the soldier pay for
his bus ticket, an off-duty limo driver began speaking with the
airport police, who told the driver the story of the weary traveler.
Inspired by Michelle’s generosity, the driver offered to take the
soldier home that night. Because of Michelle Brown’s kindness, a
returning soldier was able to rest a little easier during his trip
home.
